New York, NY – Thanksgiving travelers across New York could encounter sharply different weather conditions as November draws to a close. While New York City may experience relatively quiet holiday weather, colder northern and higher elevation communities could see flurries ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Northeast forecast region favors cool, mostly fair conditions from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day, with possible flurries in northern and higher elevation areas.
The publication describes the broader Northeast pattern as favorable for holiday travel. It does not forecast snow specifically for New York City, Buffalo, Albany or Binghamton, nor does it provide city level snowfall totals or timing.
Geography is particularly important in New York. Buffalo and western New York can experience lake effect snowfall when cold air crosses the relatively warmer waters of Lake Erie. Binghamton and portions of central New York also have different November snowfall patterns than communities along the Atlantic coast.
Albany and the Capital Region can experience early season snow, while New York City's coastal location often supports milder conditions during marginal late autumn weather systems.
NOAA's November outlook favors above normal temperatures along the East Coast and above normal precipitation across much of the region. Those monthly probabilities do not establish whether snow will fall during Thanksgiving week.
The agency's broader winter 2026 27 outlook also favors warmer conditions across much of the East, but individual cold spells and winter storms remain possible.
For travelers, I 90 between Buffalo and Albany, I 81 through central New York and I 87 connecting Albany with New York City are important routes to monitor if colder weather develops.
Could New York see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes, particularly in northern, western and higher elevation areas. However, the Almanac's regional outlook does not confirm snowfall in any specific New York city.
Travelers should consult updated National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for more reliable snowfall timing, accumulation expectations and road conditions.
