BUFFALO, NY – Western and north central New York residents can expect a chilly Tuesday night, October 20, with temperatures falling into the upper 20s and 30s across the region. Localized fog could also create visibility concerns for drivers heading out early Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, clear skies and cooler overnight temperatures are expected through Wednesday, October 21, with fog potentially developing in river valleys and near inland lakes.
The forecast, issued Tuesday afternoon, shows overnight temperatures varying considerably across western New York, the Finger Lakes and the eastern Lake Ontario region.
Buffalo is expected to reach approximately 37 degrees overnight, while nearby Lockport could fall to 34 degrees. Batavia and Warsaw are forecast near 34 degrees, with Springville around 33 degrees.
Farther east, Rochester could drop to 36 degrees, while Geneva is forecast near 36 degrees and Sodus around 38 degrees.
Some inland communities could experience even colder conditions. Olean is forecast to reach approximately 29 degrees, while Jamestown and Wellsville could see lows near 32 degrees.
Across the eastern Lake Ontario region, Watertown and Pulaski are forecast near 33 degrees, with Fulton around 32 degrees. Lowville could reach 31 degrees, while the higher terrain near Highmarket could drop to approximately 28 degrees.
Although skies are expected to remain generally clear, the weather service cautioned that localized fog could form late Tuesday night and persist into part of Wednesday morning.
Motorists traveling through low lying areas, river valleys and locations near inland lakes should remain alert for sudden reductions in visibility.
Drivers encountering fog should reduce speed, increase following distance and use low beam headlights.
The forecast does not indicate widespread fog across the entire region, and conditions may vary significantly between communities.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts before Wednesday morning travel, particularly in locations where temperatures approach or fall below freezing.
