Buffalo, NY – With November 2026 approaching, Buffalo's snowfall records from last year reveal an interesting early season weather pattern. The city received more snow than its historical November average despite finishing the month with below normal precipitation, offering a reminder that Western New York can experience meaningful winter conditions well before December.
According to the National Weather Service's November 2025 climate summary for Buffalo, the city recorded 9.5 inches of snowfall during the month, compared with a historical November normal of 7.8 inches. That represents a surplus of 1.7 inches, or approximately 22% above normal.
The report ranked November 2025 as the 53rd highest November snowfall total in Buffalo's 154 year period of record.
November Snowfall Exceeded Historical Averages Buffalo experienced several measurable snowfalls during November 2025.
The National Weather Service recorded 1.1 inches on November 9, followed by 1.0 inch November 10 and 2.5 inches November 11.
Another 0.3 inches fell November 12.
Later in the month, measurable snowfall returned, including 0.2 inches November 26, 2.1 inches November 27 and 2.3 inches November 30.
The largest daily snowfall was 2.5 inches on November 11.
Buffalo recorded seven days with at least 0.1 inches of measurable snowfall during the month.
Although none of those individual snowfalls was particularly extreme by Buffalo standards, the repeated accumulations pushed the monthly total above normal.
A Daily Temperature Record Added Another Detail November 2025 also featured a notable temperature record.
According to the National Weather Service, Buffalo tied its daily record low maximum temperature on November 10, when the high reached only 29 degrees.
The previous record of 29 degrees was established in 2017.
This was a temperature record rather than a snowfall record, but it demonstrates how cold conditions developed during the early part of November.
Buffalo's average monthly temperature was 39.8 degrees, approximately 1.2 degrees below normal.
The average high was 46.3 degrees, while the average low was 33.2 degrees.
Temperatures fell as low as 25 degrees during the month.
Why the Precipitation Numbers Are Interesting Despite above normal snowfall, Buffalo finished November with less total precipitation than usual.
The city recorded 2.63 inches of precipitation, compared with a historical normal of 3.50 inches.
That represents a deficit of 0.87 inches.
The contrast illustrates how total precipitation and snowfall can move in different directions.
Snowfall depends on precipitation type, temperature and other atmospheric conditions, while precipitation totals measure the liquid equivalent of rain and melted snow.
A month can therefore produce above normal snowfall even when its overall precipitation is below average.
What November 2025 Means for 2026 Buffalo's November 2025 weather provides useful perspective as Western New York approaches another winter season.
However, last year's above normal snowfall does not predict what will happen during November 2026.
The timing of incoming weather systems, colder air and lake effect conditions will influence whether the upcoming month produces significant snowfall.
For residents across Buffalo, Erie County and surrounding Western New York communities, early season snow can affect travel before December arrives.
November 2025 demonstrated that repeated moderate snowfalls can push monthly totals above historical averages without a single major storm.
As November 2026 approaches, will Buffalo experience another above normal snowfall month, or could winter take longer to establish itself?
