Binghamton, NY – Portions of central and upstate New York could experience strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, October 13, with damaging wind gusts the primary concern and a low possibility of an isolated tornado.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, thunderstorms could develop from the Finger Lakes region into the Mohawk Valley Tuesday afternoon if morning clouds and rain clear long enough for the atmosphere to become unstable.
Forecasters emphasize that while the overall severe weather threat remains limited, a few thunderstorms could become strong enough to produce hazardous conditions.
Level 1 Severe Weather Risk Across Central New York
The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of central New York under a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk, classified as marginal.
The highlighted area includes communities near Syracuse, Ithaca, Utica and surrounding portions of the Finger Lakes and Mohawk Valley.
The primary threat involves locally damaging thunderstorm winds, which could bring down tree limbs, cause isolated power outages and create hazardous travel conditions.
Isolated Tornado Cannot Be Ruled Out
The National Weather Service also identifies a secondary threat of an isolated tornado.
Although forecasters describe the tornado potential as low, atmospheric conditions could support a brief tornado if thunderstorms become sufficiently organized.
The presence of a tornado threat does not mean one is expected to develop, and most communities within the outlook area may not experience severe weather.
Afternoon Storm Development Depends on Morning Conditions
One of the biggest factors influencing Tuesday's severe weather potential is how quickly morning clouds and showers clear.
If sunshine returns and the atmosphere becomes sufficiently unstable, developing thunderstorms could intensify during the afternoon.
However, lingering cloud cover and rainfall could limit storm strength.
Residents across the Finger Lakes, Syracuse area and Mohawk Valley should monitor updated forecasts and remain prepared for changing conditions Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to have reliable ways to receive severe weather warnings and seek sturdy indoor shelter if threatening storms approach.
