Albany, NY – Five common vehicle problems could leave New York drivers stranded when snow and freezing temperatures arrive. From Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse to Albany, Utica, Binghamton, Watertown, Plattsburgh and New York City, motorists should inspect their vehicles before winter weather makes travel more hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service NWS , winter vehicle preparedness includes checking tires, brakes, windshield wipers, washer fluid and batteries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA also recommends inspecting essential vehicle systems and carrying emergency supplies.
5 Car Problems to Fix Before Snow 1. Worn tires or low pressure
Insufficient tread reduces traction on snowy or icy pavement. Check tire pressure against the manufacturer's recommendation, usually found on the driver's door jamb. Winter tires can improve traction in cold, snowy conditions.
2. Brakes that need attention
Slippery pavement increases stopping distances. Have worn or poorly performing brakes inspected by a qualified mechanic. All wheel drive does not eliminate braking risks on ice.
3. Damaged windshield wipers
Replace streaking or damaged wipers, use winter rated washer fluid and keep an ice scraper and snow brush available.
4. A weak battery
Cold temperatures reduce battery performance. Test aging batteries and charging systems before winter, and consider carrying a portable jump starter.
5. Heating, lighting or fluid problems
Check the heater, windshield defroster, headlights, brake lights and engine coolant protection. Follow manufacturer recommendations for essential fluids.
New York Highways Face Different Winter Hazards Winter weather can affect Interstate 90, Interstate 81, Interstate 87, Interstate 84, Interstate 86 and Interstate 95.
Lake effect snow can create dangerous conditions near Buffalo, Rochester, Watertown and communities east of Lakes Erie and Ontario. The Adirondacks, Catskills and Hudson Valley face additional risks from snow, freezing rain and icy mountain roads.
In New York City and on Long Island, winter precipitation can also create slippery bridges, ramps and heavily traveled commuter routes.
What Drivers Should Keep in Their Cars The NHTSA recommends blankets, warm clothing, water, nonperishable food, a flashlight and a phone charger. A shovel, jumper cables or portable jump starter, and reflective warning devices can provide additional protection.
Before traveling, check the forecast, review road conditions, clear snow from the entire vehicle and allow extra time.
If stranded during severe weather, staying with the vehicle may be safer than walking for help. Keep the exhaust pipe clear before running the engine to reduce carbon monoxide risks.
