Albany, NY – Residents across eastern and central Upstate New York should prepare for a sharp weather change this weekend, with widespread rain Friday, wind gusts approaching 40 mph Saturday and the possibility of mountain snow showers as colder air moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, cool and dry conditions Thursday, Oct. 15, will give way to unsettled weather Friday as a low pressure system moves across the area.
Forecast precipitation probabilities reach 90% to 100% in numerous communities Friday, including Albany, Amsterdam, Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs and Herkimer.
Much colder air is expected to arrive Friday night into Saturday, bringing breezy conditions and falling temperatures.
Albany is forecast to reach 63 degrees Friday before dropping to a high of just 46 Saturday. Glens Falls could fall from 59 to 43 degrees, while Cobleskill drops from 64 to 42.
The colder conditions will be especially noticeable in higher elevations.
Piseco is forecast to reach only 36 degrees Saturday, with overnight lows near 24 degrees. The National Weather Service also indicates the possibility of snow showers in mountain areas.
Wind will add another noticeable impact.
Forecast gusts Saturday could reach 37 mph in Albany, 38 mph in Amsterdam and 39 mph in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Drivers should anticipate wet roads Friday, while Saturday's gusty conditions could make travel more difficult on exposed roads and in mountainous terrain.
Although mountain snow showers are possible, the provided forecast does not indicate widespread accumulating snow across lower elevation communities.
Sunday is expected to remain cool but become less windy, with afternoon temperatures recovering into the 50s across much of the region.
Residents planning weekend travel or outdoor activities should monitor updated forecasts, particularly in higher elevations where temperatures could fall below freezing.
