Albany, NY – Upstate New York is moving deeper into its fall frost season, with a cold front bringing showers tonight followed by increasingly chilly October nights.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, Sunday morning will remain dry before a weak low pressure system brings a 20% to 40% chance of afternoon showers, mainly south and east of Albany.
High temperatures Sunday will range from 57 to 67 degrees across the region.
Another round of showers becomes more likely tonight as a cold front approaches from the west. Those showers will primarily affect areas north and west of Albany.
Overnight lows are forecast to range from 40 to 52 degrees. The current forecast does not call for widespread frost or freezing temperatures tonight, but the lower end of that range signals the seasonal transition underway across eastern New York.
October is the time of year when frost and freezes become an increasing concern across Upstate New York, especially in colder valleys and higher terrain. Residents with gardens and other cold sensitive vegetation should begin monitoring nighttime forecasts closely, but climatology alone does not mean frost is imminent at any particular location.
For Albany itself, Sunday will be relatively mild, with only a chance of showers before the cold front arrives. Temperatures tonight should remain above freezing.
The immediate forecast therefore favors showers rather than frost. Expect highs in the upper 50s to upper 60s Sunday, followed by lows ranging through the 40s and lower 50s tonight, with colder locations worth watching as October progresses.
