Albany, New York – Residents across eastern New York should keep weather alerts close through Sunday evening as isolated thunderstorms develop, with damaging wind gusts and hail posing the primary severe weather threats.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, isolated thunderstorms are possible late Sunday afternoon into the evening. The overall severe weather risk remains low across much of the Capital Region, but stronger storms could produce damaging winds or hail.
The greatest concern is west of Albany. The NWS outlook places areas around Herkimer and locations farther west within a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms. Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls and Hudson sit in a lower risk area.
Separate NWS graphics show probabilities for severe wind and hail within 25 miles of a location. The higher probabilities remain primarily west of the immediate Albany area, but isolated stronger storms remain possible farther east.
Anyone attending outdoor events should have a way to receive warnings and move indoors when thunder approaches. Drivers could encounter sudden heavy rain and reduced visibility beneath stronger cells.
The threat extends beyond the Capital Region into portions of the Mohawk Valley, Adirondacks and surrounding areas. Residents should continue monitoring NWS alerts through Sunday evening as individual thunderstorms develop and move across eastern New York.
