ALBANY, NY — A chilly weekend will bring temperatures down to the freezing mark in the Albany area Saturday night, Oct. 17, before sunshine and a gradual warming trend push afternoon highs back into the 60s early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, Rensselaer could see temperatures fall to around 32 degrees Saturday night following a breezy afternoon with highs reaching only 46 degrees.
The colder conditions arrive after a wet Friday, when showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected before temperatures fall sharply heading into the weekend.
Friday's high near 64 degrees will give way to Saturday's forecast high of 46, an 18 degree drop in just one day.
Freezing Temperatures Possible Saturday Night The most significant development arrives Saturday night, when temperatures in Rensselaer are expected to reach the freezing point under mostly clear skies.
The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center reported Wednesday that strong high pressure descending from Canada would bring a sharp temperature change to much of the central United States later this week.
While that national discussion focused primarily on the central U.S., the local Albany area forecast also shows a substantial cooldown by Saturday.
Temperatures near freezing could be important for residents with sensitive outdoor plants, particularly in exposed locations.
The supplied forecast does not establish whether a frost or freeze advisory will be issued, and temperatures elsewhere across the Capital Region may vary.
Saturday's breezy conditions will add to the autumn feel, with daytime temperatures struggling to climb beyond the middle 40s in Rensselaer.
Sunshine Brings a Gradual Recovery The colder weather will begin easing Sunday as sunshine returns and afternoon temperatures climb to around 57 degrees.
Sunday night remains chilly, with lows near 34 degrees, before milder conditions develop Monday.
By Tuesday, afternoon highs are expected to reach the middle 60s, nearly 20 degrees warmer than Saturday.
The improving weather follows Friday's widespread showers, offering a stretch of predominantly dry conditions for outdoor activities across the Albany area forecast location.
The five day outlook indicates that the coldest conditions will be concentrated around the weekend, with temperatures recovering steadily into the new workweek.
