Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico is favored to hold onto warmer than normal weather Oct. 12 18, but the state's high desert climate could still deliver a distinctly autumnal contrast once the sun goes down.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, favors above normal temperatures across New Mexico during the seven day period. The outlook also favors above normal precipitation.
For Albuquerque, Santa Fe and communities across the state, the temperature signal means the week as a whole is more likely to average warmer than normal. It does not mean every afternoon or night will be unusually warm.
New Mexico’s elevation and dry climate can produce large differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Higher elevations and colder valleys could still have chilly mornings despite the broader warm signal.
Frost or freezing temperatures cannot be determined from this outlook alone. CPC does not provide specific overnight lows at this range, making shorter range forecasts important for residents in colder mountain and high elevation communities.
The wetter signal also requires some context in New Mexico, where normal precipitation can be limited during October. Above normal precipitation is favored for the period, but the outlook does not specify rainfall amounts, individual storms or which days could be wet.
The broader Oct. 12 18 picture is therefore warmer than normal fall weather with a wetter lean and potentially chilly nights in colder locations .
More precise temperatures, precipitation chances and any frost or freeze concerns should become clearer as Oct. 12 approaches and National Weather Service forecasts move into shorter range.
