Albuquerque, NM – Residents across portions of New Mexico should prepare for changing weather conditions beginning Saturday, October 10, as scattered showers and thunderstorms spread eastward, followed by several days of stronger winds that could produce gusts near 45 mph in isolated areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, rain chances are increasing across western and portions of central New Mexico this weekend, with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing Saturday afternoon and continuing into Sunday.
Most locations receiving precipitation are expected to see relatively light rainfall, generally one quarter inch or less each day. However, localized areas could receive more than half an inch.
Communities across western New Mexico, including Gallup and Grants, have opportunities for showers, while precipitation chances extend toward central portions of the state, including the Albuquerque region.
Despite the increasing cloud cover and rainfall potential, temperatures will remain near normal to approximately 10 degrees above average.
The warmest departures from typical October temperatures are expected across the eastern plains, where conditions will remain warmer than average.
A more noticeable weather concern develops Sunday as winds begin strengthening across the region.
The National Weather Service expects breezy to windy conditions Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with occasional gusts of 25 to 35 mph becoming more widespread.
Some scattered locations could experience stronger gusts approaching 45 mph.
These conditions may create difficult travel for high profile vehicles, particularly along exposed highways and open terrain.
Drivers traveling Interstate 40 and Interstate 25 should remain alert for changing wind conditions, especially early next week.
Residents should also secure lightweight outdoor objects before the stronger winds arrive.
Although the forecast identifies gusty conditions, the supplied outlook does not establish an official wind advisory or warning.
