Albuquerque, NM – A 26 year old man was fatally shot by a New Mexico State Police officer Saturday after authorities say he fired a handgun during a struggle that followed a foot pursuit.
According to New Mexico State Police, the encounter began at approximately 12:11 p.m. near Cochiti Road and California Street. An officer reportedly saw two men jaywalking, exited his patrol vehicle and told them they were being detained.
Police said one of the men, identified as Izaeah Elajah Amar Washington, allegedly walked away before running when the officer ordered him to stop.
The officer pursued Washington on foot and eventually caught up with him, according to NMSP. Police said a physical struggle followed, causing both men to fall to the ground.
During that encounter, Washington allegedly displayed a handgun and fired at least one round, which missed the officer. The officer then fired his department issued weapon, striking Washington at least once, state police said.
Emergency personnel provided medical aid before Washington was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The officer was not injured.
Investigators determined the handgun allegedly possessed by Washington had been reported stolen, according to NMSP.
The shooting remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau and a multi agency task force that includes the Bernalillo County Sheriff 's Office and Albuquerque Police Department .
The officer's identity has not been released pending interviews and has been placed on standard administrative leave. NMSP said its findings will ultimately be forwarded to the appropriate district attorney for review. The district attorney, not state police, will determine whether the officer's actions were legally justified.
