Saddle Brook, NJ – New Jersey State Police are investigating a serious hit and run crash that occurred early Sunday, September 20, 2026. The incident took place at approximately 4:34 a.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound near milepost 62.4 in the deceleration lane.
According to authorities, a Saddle Brook Township police officer was conducting a traffic stop on a grey Nissan Maxima when the incident occurred. While the officer was outside the vehicle, an unknown vehicle traveling east allegedly struck the left side of the Nissan Maxima and the officer. The striking vehicle then fled the scene immediately following the impact.
Officials stated that the officer sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. The three occupants of the stopped Nissan Maxima reportedly sustained no injuries. Police are now calling on the public for assistance in identifying the vehicle or driver involved in this incident.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or possesses information regarding events occurring before, during, or after the incident is encouraged to contact the Troop B Totowa Station at 973 785 9412. Anonymous tips are welcome. State police also reminded motorists to comply with New Jersey's Move Over Law, which requires drivers to change lanes or slow down significantly when approaching emergency responders, tow trucks, or highway workers stopped with flashing lights.
