Atlantic City, NJ – Coastal communities across New Jersey face multiple rounds of tidal flooding beginning Tuesday evening, October 20, with the greatest concern arriving Wednesday night as strong northeasterly winds push water toward vulnerable shorelines.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Coastal Flood Advisories are in effect for portions of the New Jersey coast Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., while additional tidal flooding is expected through at least Thursday.
Wednesday evening's high tide is expected to bring the most significant flooding threat , with widespread minor to low end moderate tidal flooding possible, particularly around back bays.
Affected areas could include portions of Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Monmouth counties, including communities near Atlantic City, Ocean City, Toms River, Long Beach Island and Cape May.
Low lying roads, waterfront neighborhoods and locations with poor drainage could experience water accumulation during high tide. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and monitor local conditions.
Strong winds will add to the coastal concerns.
The Weather Service forecasts northeasterly wind gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph along portions of the coast Tuesday into Wednesday. Inland communities are generally expected to experience lower gusts, ranging from approximately 20 to 30 mph.
Marine conditions will also become hazardous, with Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings affecting offshore waters. Marine wind gusts could reach 30 to 45 knots in affected zones.
Boaters and those planning coastal activities should use caution, particularly as stronger winds and elevated water levels overlap.
The flooding threat is expected to continue through at least Thursday, October 22, although the severity will depend on local tidal conditions and wind patterns.
Residents should monitor updated coastal flood statements and local emergency guidance as Wednesday evening approaches.
