Windham, NH – A driver has died following an early morning crash involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 93 in Windham, New Hampshire, Thursday, Oct. 22, prompting an emergency response and the closure of multiple northbound lanes for approximately two hours.
According to New Hampshire State Police, troopers assigned to Troop B responded around 5:50 a.m. to reports of a crash on I 93 northbound near mile marker 6.6 in Windham, Rockingham County.
Witnesses initially reported what appeared to be a disabled vehicle smoking in the middle of the roadway.
Toyota Strikes Rear of Tractor Trailer
When troopers arrived, they discovered a 2007 Toyota Solara with substantial damage to its front end.
A preliminary investigation determined that the Toyota, driven by an adult male, had been traveling northbound in the middle lane when it struck the rear of a tractor trailer.
Following the collision, the tractor trailer driver pulled into a weigh station a short distance ahead and notified State Police about the incident.
Driver Pronounced Dead at Hospital
Emergency responders transported the Toyota driver to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
State police have not released the driver's identity pending notification of his next of kin.
The tractor trailer driver was not injured, according to investigators.
I 93 Northbound Lanes Blocked
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions along I 93 northbound during the Thursday morning commute.
Multiple northbound lanes remained blocked for approximately two hours while emergency personnel responded and troopers conducted their investigation.
The incident occurred along a major travel corridor connecting southern New Hampshire with the greater Boston metropolitan area.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
New Hampshire State Police said all aspects of the collision remain under investigation.
Authorities have not announced what caused the Toyota to strike the tractor trailer.
