Manchester, NH – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm far more dangerous than the snow, ice and freezing temperatures New Hampshire residents experience every year. As the 2026 27 winter season approaches, recognizing those words could become especially important from Manchester and Concord to the White Mountains and Seacoast.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The designation is reserved for rare, potentially historic storms when forecasters have high confidence that extreme conditions pose an exceptional threat to lives and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words New Hampshire Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" is not simply another description of heavy snowfall or icy highways.
A Blizzard Warning already indicates dangerous winds and severely reduced visibility. Adding PDS wording emphasizes an extraordinary level of danger.
The terminology could also appear in exceptional Ice Storm Warnings when damaging ice accumulation threatens power systems and essential services.
Why Could This Matter Across New Hampshire?
New Hampshire's geography creates different winter hazards, from coastal nor'easters to intense mountain snowstorms and widespread freezing rain.
During extreme conditions, Interstate 93 through the White Mountains and Interstate 95 along the Seacoast could experience dangerous travel disruptions.
Significant ice accumulation can bring down trees and power lines, potentially leaving communities without electricity or reliable heating during freezing temperatures.
These are possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Warning?
No. PDS is additional language within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should New Hampshire Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears, residents should stay off roads, follow emergency instructions and prepare for potentially serious disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic storm is currently forecast for New Hampshire.
However, seeing "Particularly Dangerous Situation" in an official warning means forecasters are communicating an exceptional, potentially life threatening threat requiring immediate attention.
