Concord, NH – Winter made an early appearance across portions of the Northeast over the weekend, with measurable snowfall reported in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and New York between Friday, October 16, and Sunday, October 18.
According to the National Weather Service, snow fell across higher elevations of northern New England and northern New York, marking some locations' first snowfall of the 2026 fall season.
The highest total included in the agency's report came from Mount Washington, New Hampshire, where 2.3 inches of snow accumulated during the three day period.
In Vermont, Averill recorded 2 inches, while Waterbury received 0.4 inches. Braintree reported 0.1 inches, with trace amounts observed in several other communities.
Elsewhere in New Hampshire, Gray Knob recorded 0.9 inches, while Jefferson, Lyman and West Unity were among locations reporting trace snowfall.
Maine also experienced early season winter conditions.
New Sweden recorded 0.9 inches, Caribou received 0.3 inches and Castle Hill reported 0.1 inches. Trace amounts were documented in Kingfield, Presque Isle and Rangeley.
Across northern New York, Long Lake received 0.3 inches, while Lake Placid and Saranac Lake each recorded 0.1 inches.
Additional locations, including Indian Lake, North Creek and Hoffmeister, reported traces of snow.
The October 16 18 snowfall highlights the seasonal transition underway across northern portions of the Northeast , particularly in higher elevation communities where colder conditions can arrive earlier than in surrounding valleys.
Although the reported accumulations were relatively modest, the snowfall provided an early reminder that winter weather can develop well before December.
The National Weather Service report documents snowfall that has already occurred and does not indicate that another storm is approaching.
Residents and travelers heading into northern mountain areas should continue monitoring local forecasts as autumn progresses and overnight temperatures become colder.
