Reno, Nevada – Drivers and outdoor recreationists across western Nevada face a sharp change Saturday as wind gusts reach 45 mph or higher, with 55 to 65 mph gusts in wind prone areas and more than 80 mph along exposed ridges. High profile vehicles on U.S. 395 and Interstate 580 could face especially difficult travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a High Wind Watch covers the Reno Carson Minden area and Mono County from 11 a.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday. A Wind Advisory is also posted for the Greater Lake Tahoe area, western Nevada Basin and Range, northeast California and northern Washoe County from 11 a.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday.
Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake could see waves of 1 to 3 feet. Blowing dust may sharply reduce visibility, while strong crosswinds could make travel hazardous and create turbulence for flights. Residents should secure patio furniture and other loose objects and prepare for possible power outages.
Fire danger will rise at the same time. A Red Flag Warning covers the Sierra Front, including the Reno Carson City Minden area, Alpine County, northern Mono County and southern Lyon County beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and continuing through midnight. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, combined with gusts reaching 55 to 65 mph in exposed locations, could drive rapid fire growth.
Anyone planning outdoor recreation Friday or Saturday should consider postponing activities during the strongest winds. Avoid anything that could create a spark, keep emergency supplies ready and monitor additional National Weather Service alerts as Saturday approaches.
