Las Vegas, NV – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected across parts of Nevada and eastern California Monday night, October 12, as colder air moves into the region, bringing the threat of near freezing conditions and prompting a Freeze Watch for several communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, overnight temperatures could fall into the low 30s Monday night into Tuesday morning, October 13, following the passage of a weather trough and the remnants of Rachel.
The Freeze Watch includes central Nye County and Esmeralda County in Nevada, along with the northern Owens Valley in California.
Communities in and near the affected areas include Tonopah, Goldfield, Dyer, Gold Point and Bishop.
The approaching cold air could bring temperatures close to the freezing mark of 32 degrees, potentially threatening sensitive vegetation, outdoor plumbing and other items vulnerable to cold weather.
Residents are being encouraged to take precautions before temperatures drop Monday night.
The National Weather Service recommends turning off outdoor sprinklers and protecting pressure vacuum breaker valves, which can be damaged when water freezes inside exposed irrigation equipment.
Sensitive plants should be covered or brought indoors, while residents with outdoor pets should consider bringing them inside when possible.
The colder conditions follow a period of unsettled weather associated with the departing system and Rachel's remnants.
Although the Freeze Watch does not guarantee freezing temperatures at every location, it indicates conditions may become cold enough to damage unprotected plants and vulnerable outdoor equipment.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts Monday, as the watch could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning if confidence in freezing temperatures increases.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight Monday into early Tuesday, with temperatures varying by elevation and location.
For communities across central Nevada and the northern Owens Valley, the approaching cold snap serves as a reminder that winterlike temperatures can arrive quickly during October.
