Las Vegas, NV – A widespread Flood Watch across southern Nevada, southeastern California and northwestern Arizona is raising concerns about dangerous flash flooding Saturday as incoming tropical moisture threatens desert highways, low water crossings and urban communities through late Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, the watch begins at 11 a.m. PDT Saturday for the Las Vegas Valley and numerous surrounding areas, while Death Valley National Park, the western Mojave Desert and portions of central Nevada enter the watch later Saturday afternoon.
The affected areas include Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite, Pahrump, Laughlin and communities near Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.
In Arizona, the watch extends into Kingman, Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City and surrounding portions of Mohave County.
California locations include Death Valley National Park, Barstow, Needles, Baker, Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley.
Forecasters expect widespread showers and thunderstorms as tropical moisture moves into the region. Some storms could produce rainfall intense enough to trigger sudden flash flooding.
The Weather Service warns that excessive runoff could flood normally dry washes, streams, low lying roads and poorly drained urban areas.
Desert terrain presents particular hazards because heavy rainfall can send water rushing through washes and crossings, sometimes far from where the heaviest rain falls.
Motorists traveling across southern Nevada and the Mojave Desert should remain cautious, especially near flood prone roadways and low water crossings.
A Flood Watch means flash flooding is possible, not necessarily occurring.
Residents and visitors should monitor updated weather forecasts and be prepared to respond quickly if Flash Flood Warnings are issued.
The flooding threat is expected to continue through late Sunday night, with conditions varying across the affected region.
