Las Vegas, NV – Residents across portions of western Nevada and eastern California are facing a potentially damaging overnight freeze as temperatures could fall to 30 degrees by Tuesday morning, threatening sensitive vegetation and exposed outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Freeze Watch remains in effect from midnight PDT Monday night through 10 a.m. PDT Tuesday, October 13, for Esmeralda and central Nye counties in Nevada and the northern Owens Valley in California.
The alert includes Nevada communities such as Beatty, Goldfield, Silver Peak and Dyer, along with California communities including Bishop, Lone Pine and Independence.
Temperatures as low as 30 degrees are possible across the affected areas, potentially bringing frost and freezing conditions capable of damaging or killing crops, garden plants and other sensitive vegetation.
The overnight cold could also create problems for homeowners with exposed outdoor water pipes, particularly in locations where temperatures remain below freezing long enough for water inside plumbing to freeze.
Forecasters are encouraging residents to take protective action before temperatures drop late Monday night.
Gardeners should consider bringing potted plants indoors or covering vulnerable vegetation with frost cloths or other appropriate protective materials.
Homeowners can also reduce the risk of frozen pipes by insulating exposed plumbing, draining outdoor water lines where practical or allowing vulnerable faucets to drip slowly when appropriate.
The cold weather follows a period of gusty conditions in portions of Nevada. A Wind Advisory covering Esmeralda and central Nye counties was scheduled to expire at 5 a.m. Monday.
A Freeze Watch means conditions are favorable for freezing temperatures, but a widespread freeze is not yet certain.
Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates throughout Monday, as the watch could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning if confidence in freezing temperatures increases.
