Las Vegas, NV – Strong winds are expected to sweep across southern Nevada, northwestern Arizona and southeastern California this weekend, with gusts reaching 55 mph in some areas. Drivers, residents and boaters could face hazardous conditions as widespread Wind Advisories extend into early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Wind Advisory will take effect at 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 , across much of the Las Vegas Valley, the Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado River region.
Forecasters expect south winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph.
Affected communities include Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Laughlin, Mesquite and Primm in Nevada.
In Arizona, the advisory covers Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, Kingman, Golden Valley and surrounding communities.
California locations include Barstow, Needles, Baker, Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms.
A separate advisory begins earlier, at 2 p.m. Saturday , across Death Valley National Park and portions of Nevada's Nye, Lincoln and Esmeralda counties.
Those areas could experience gusts up to 45 mph through 5 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters expect a temporary lull in those earlier advisory areas late Saturday night into Sunday morning before winds strengthen again Sunday afternoon.
The National Weather Service warns that strong gusts could blow around unsecured objects, bring down tree limbs and cause a few power outages.
High profile vehicles may encounter difficult driving conditions on exposed highways, particularly where crosswinds develop.
Boaters should also exercise caution on Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and other area lakes , where strong winds and rough waves could create hazardous conditions for small craft.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, decorations and other loose belongings before winds increase.
The advisories are scheduled to expire early Monday, but travelers and boaters should monitor updated forecasts throughout the weekend.
