Ely, NV – Strong winds are expected to sweep across portions of eastern and central Nevada beginning Saturday morning, bringing gusts up to 50 mph and potentially hazardous blowing dust. Drivers could encounter sharply reduced visibility Saturday afternoon, while residents face the possibility of falling tree limbs and isolated power outages through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. PDT Saturday, Oct. 10, until 5 a.m. PDT Monday, Oct. 12 , covering White Pine County, southeastern Elko County and northeastern and northwestern Nye County.
Forecasters expect sustained south to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 50 mph across the advisory area.
Affected communities include Ely, McGill, Ruth, Lund, Cherry Creek, West Wendover, Tonopah, Manhattan, Round Mountain, Duckwater and Preston.
One of the biggest concerns is blowing dust Saturday afternoon , when strong winds could reduce visibility to one mile or less in some locations.
Sudden visibility reductions could create dangerous driving conditions, particularly along exposed highways and open desert roads where dust can move across travel lanes.
High profile vehicles, including tractor trailers, buses and recreational vehicles, may also be vulnerable to strong crosswinds.
The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds could blow around unsecured outdoor objects, bring down tree limbs and cause a few power outages.
Residents are encouraged to secure patio furniture, trash containers and other loose belongings before winds strengthen.
Motorists should reduce speeds, increase following distances and use extra caution when encountering blowing dust or strong crosswinds.
If visibility suddenly deteriorates, drivers should avoid abrupt braking and find a safe location away from traffic if stopping becomes necessary.
The Wind Advisory continues through Sunday night and is scheduled to expire at 5 a.m. PDT Monday.
Residents and travelers should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as conditions develop throughout the weekend.
