ELKO, NV – A powerful mountain snowstorm is expected to bring up to 16 inches of snow to the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range beginning Saturday evening, with snow covered roads anticipated across several mountain routes through Sunday night.
The National Weather Service in Elko issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range in Elko County, effective from 5 p.m. PDT Saturday, Oct. 31, until 10 p.m. PST Sunday, Nov. 1. The warning replaces an earlier Winter Storm Watch.
Forecasters expect 12 to 16 inches of snow above 7,500 feet, while elevations between 6,500 and 7,500 feet are expected to receive 8 to 12 inches.
The heaviest accumulations are forecast for higher mountain elevations, rather than the city of Elko or the entire county.
Snow covered roads are expected along State Route 229 through Secret Pass, into Lamoille Canyon and across Harrison Pass at the southern end of the Ruby Mountains.
Those routes could become difficult to navigate as accumulating snow affects mountain passes and higher elevation roads.
The National Weather Service is urging travelers to delay all travel if possible during the warning period.
Anyone who must travel should ensure their vehicle is winterized and in good working condition before heading into the mountains.
The storm coincides with the end of daylight saving time early Sunday, when clocks move back one hour from Pacific Daylight Time to Pacific Standard Time.
The warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. PST Sunday, with significant snow accumulations expected at higher elevations before conditions improve.
Travelers should prepare for snow covered mountain roads and potentially hazardous driving conditions from Saturday evening through Sunday night, particularly around Secret Pass, Lamoille Canyon and Harrison Pass.
