Omaha, NE – High fire danger is expected across northeast Nebraska Saturday, Oct. 10, as strong winds gusting 35 to more than 45 mph combine with warm conditions, following several days of mostly dry weather across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley said Thursday morning that Saturday will bring the greatest fire weather concerns, with gusty winds developing as afternoon temperatures climb into the 80s.
Thursday, Oct. 8, will feature partly cloudy skies with highs between 75 and 80 degrees. A 20% to 30% chance of showers is forecast Thursday night across northeast Nebraska and western Iowa, with overnight lows ranging from 57 to 62 degrees.
Friday will remain mostly sunny and breezy, with highs reaching 80 to 85 degrees and overnight lows between 64 and 66 degrees.
Saturday will bring another warm afternoon, with highs between 80 and 85 degrees. However, winds gusting 35 to more than 45 mph could increase the potential for fires to spread rapidly in northeast Nebraska.
The weather service specifically highlighted high fire danger Saturday, although the supplied outlook does not indicate that a Red Flag Warning has been issued.
Sunday will remain windy under partly cloudy skies, with highs ranging from 78 to 82 degrees.
A cooling trend begins Monday, Oct. 12, when temperatures fall to 68 to 75 degrees. Tuesday will be cooler still, with highs between 62 and 66 degrees and a slight chance of rain.
By Wednesday, Oct. 14, rain chances will increase, with the outlook indicating a 45% chance of precipitation and highs ranging from 64 to 69 degrees.
Forecasters emphasized that the exact timing of more widespread rainfall remains uncertain.
Residents across northeast Nebraska should use extra caution with outdoor burning Saturday and monitor updated forecasts for potential fire weather alerts. Cooler temperatures and increasing rain chances are expected by the middle of next week.
