Omaha, NE – Gusty south winds and unseasonably warm temperatures could increase fire danger across eastern Nebraska Saturday, Oct. 10, with wind gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph or higher in some areas and afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 80s.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, sunny but breezy conditions are expected throughout the weekend, with Saturday bringing the strongest winds and the greatest concern for rapidly spreading fires.
The agency's forecast shows wind gusts approaching 40 mph across portions of northeastern Nebraska, including areas near Norfolk, Albion and Bloomfield.
Bloomfield could experience gusts near 43 mph, while Norfolk could see winds approaching 39 mph. Farther east, Omaha is forecast to experience gusts near 28 mph, with Lincoln potentially reaching 35 mph.
The strongest winds are expected Saturday, when warm and dry conditions could allow fires to spread quickly, particularly across northeastern Nebraska.
The Weather Service warns that loose outdoor items may be blown around during periods of stronger winds.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor decorations and other lightweight objects before Saturday's gustiest conditions arrive.
Fire safety will also be important throughout the weekend. Forecasters recommend avoiding outdoor burning and using caution with equipment that could produce sparks.
Although elevated fire danger is expected, the posted outlook does not identify a Red Flag Warning or specify that critical fire weather conditions will occur across the entire forecast area.
