Omaha, NE – Residents across eastern Nebraska should prepare for one of the coldest nights of the season Friday, November 6, as temperatures are expected to fall near or below freezing, potentially bringing an end to the growing season in communities that have not yet experienced their first freeze.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, portions of the Omaha metropolitan area and communities near the South Dakota border have remained above freezing despite being well past their typical first freeze dates.
That could change Friday night into early Saturday as colder temperatures settle across the region.
Forecasters say overnight lows could reach 32 degrees or lower, potentially marking the first official freeze of the season in several locations.
The National Weather Service identified several communities where temperatures have remained just above freezing this fall.
Omaha's Eppley Airfield, Gretna, Valley and Crofton have each recorded seasonal lows of 34 degrees, while Verdel, Nebraska, and Yankton, South Dakota, have reached 33 degrees.
These locations are among the remaining areas that have not yet recorded freezing temperatures this season.
Friday night's expected temperature drop could finally push some of those communities below the freezing mark.
The approaching cold is especially important for residents with sensitive outdoor plants, gardens and exposed plumbing.
Temperatures at or below 32 degrees can damage vulnerable vegetation, while prolonged freezing conditions can create additional concerns for unprotected pipes.
The National Weather Service is encouraging residents to prepare people, pets, plants and pipes ahead of the colder overnight conditions.
Gardeners should consider bringing sensitive plants indoors or covering those that cannot be moved. Pet owners should also ensure animals have adequate shelter from the cold.
Although many Nebraska communities have already experienced freezing temperatures this fall, Friday night could mark a significant seasonal milestone for remaining holdouts around Omaha and near the South Dakota border.
Residents should monitor updated local forecasts at weather.gov/omaha as temperatures approach freezing overnight.
