OMAHA, Neb. — Open enrollment for 2027 health insurance begins Sunday, Nov. 1, giving Nebraska residents an opportunity to compare Marketplace plans, review premiums and determine whether they qualify for financial assistance.
Nebraska residents use the federal Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov to shop for Affordable Care Act coverage. Open enrollment runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 15, 2027 .
Residents who enroll by Dec. 15 can have coverage begin Jan. 1. After the annual enrollment window closes, most consumers need to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage.
2027 Nebraska health plans are available for comparison Federal Marketplace data for 2027 health plans is now available , allowing Nebraska residents to compare plans offered for coverage beginning Jan. 1.
Plan availability and costs can vary by ZIP code, age, household size, income and the level of coverage selected.
Nebraska’s Department of Insurance also oversees ACA compliant individual and small group plans sold in the state. Under federal rules, those plans must be guaranteed issue and renewable and cannot impose pre existing condition exclusions.
What Nebraska residents should check Omaha area residents and consumers statewide should compare more than the monthly health insurance premium when selecting 2027 coverage.
Consumers should review:
Monthly premiums Deductibles Co pays and coinsurance Maximum out of pocket costs Prescription drug coverage Doctor and hospital networks Eligibility for premium tax credits Households should also update their expected 2027 income and family information before choosing a plan because those details can affect eligibility for Marketplace financial assistance.
HealthCare.gov allows consumers to compare plans according to household and geographic information, including plans available specifically for Nebraska ZIP codes.
Nebraska plans protect pre existing conditions ACA compliant individual health insurance plans in Nebraska cannot deny eligibility based on a consumer's medical history, disability, claims experience, genetic information or existing health conditions.
Plans also cannot impose pre existing condition limitations, according to Nebraska's 2027 ACA individual and small group filing requirements.
Federal rules limit how much premiums may vary based on factors including age and tobacco use.
That means consumers should compare plans primarily on premiums, cost sharing, covered services and provider networks rather than worry about being denied Marketplace coverage because of their health history.
Financial assistance may lower premiums Nebraska residents purchasing health insurance through HealthCare.gov may qualify for premium tax credits that reduce monthly insurance costs.
The amount of assistance depends on household circumstances, including expected annual income and family size.
Because Marketplace financial assistance can change from one year to the next, returning customers should update their applications and compare available 2027 plans rather than automatically relying on their existing coverage.
Enrollment deadlines matter Nebraska residents seeking health insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027 , should complete enrollment by Dec. 15 .
The annual Marketplace enrollment period continues through Jan. 15, 2027 .
After open enrollment ends, most consumers need a qualifying life event to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage through a Special Enrollment Period.
Qualifying events can include losing other health coverage, getting married, having a child or certain changes in residence. Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program remain available throughout the year for residents who qualify.
Nebraska residents can compare available 2027 health insurance plans, determine potential financial assistance and enroll through HealthCare.gov .
