Omaha, Nebraska – Severe storms could hit eastern Nebraska this evening with 75 mph winds, 2 inch hail and tornadoes possible before the threat eases overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, widespread thunderstorms have a 60% to 90% chance of developing Monday. The greatest severe weather threat arrives Monday evening, with storm intensity expected to decrease after midnight.
A Level 2 of 5 slight risk covers Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Columbus, Nebraska City and other parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. A Level 1 marginal risk extends into southeastern portions of the area.
Damaging winds are one of the primary hazards. The Weather Service indicates maximum wind speeds of 65 to 75 mph are possible, with widely scattered damaging wind coverage.
Large hail is another concern. Hail could reach 2 inches in diameter, with widely scattered occurrences possible. The tornado threat is lower but remains present, with isolated tornadoes possible.
Morning thunderstorms could affect how the severe threat develops. The Weather Service says the risk would likely decrease if morning storms linger into the afternoon.
Residents with outdoor plans should remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. People should also identify where they can quickly take shelter if a warning is issued.
The strongest storms are expected Monday evening. Severe weather intensity should begin decreasing after midnight, with the outlook running through 7 a.m. Tuesday. Residents across the Omaha Lincoln corridor and surrounding communities should continue monitoring warnings as storms develop.
