Kansas City, MO – Multiple rounds of heavy rain are expected across parts of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri through Thursday, bringing a risk of flooding and rising creeks and rivers.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Flood Watch is in effect for portions of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri until late Thursday night. The heaviest rainfall is expected tonight through Thursday, particularly across northern Missouri.
Storms were expected to spread across the region Wednesday afternoon and evening before continuing through Thursday. Forecasters said repeated rounds of heavy rainfall will be the primary hazard, with localized flooding possible along with rises on area creeks and rivers.
A separate severe weather risk is focused on far northeast Kansas and far northwest Missouri Wednesday afternoon and evening. The NWS outlook places far northeast Kansas in a Slight Risk, Level 2 of 5, while far northwest Missouri is generally under a Marginal Risk, Level 1 of 5.
Heavy rain and flash flooding remain the main concerns. Some storms could also produce damaging winds, and forecasters said the chance for a brief tornado is low but not zero.
The severe weather window is relatively narrow and does not cover the entire Kansas City forecast area. The broader concern through Thursday is continued heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding.
Drivers should use caution if they encounter floodwater, while people near creeks and rivers should monitor conditions as water levels rise.
Rain and storms are expected to continue into Thursday, with the Flood Watch remaining in effect for affected portions of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri through late Thursday night.
