HASTINGS, NE – Warm sunshine, dry conditions and gusty winds could increase fire danger across south central Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 11. Temperatures approaching 90 degrees and wind gusts reaching 30 mph could make outdoor burning particularly risky.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, elevated fire weather concerns have developed across portions of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas because of unusually warm, dry and breezy conditions.
The local forecast calls for mostly sunny skies Sunday, with temperatures reaching approximately 88 degrees. South winds of 10 to 15 mph could produce gusts up to 30 mph.
These conditions warrant extra caution around outdoor flames, agricultural equipment and other potential ignition sources. Residents should avoid unnecessary burning and check local fire restrictions.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook identifies elevated fire weather concerns Saturday, while Sunday's warm and windy forecast warrants continued attention.
Sunday night remains mostly clear, with temperatures falling near 69 degrees and wind gusts reaching 20 mph.
Monday, Oct. 12, brings another warm afternoon for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day activities. Sunshine continues as temperatures climb near 90 degrees, with southwest wind gusts approaching 25 mph.
A noticeable cooldown arrives Tuesday, Oct. 13, when temperatures drop to approximately 74 degrees under sunny skies.
However, showers and thunderstorms could develop after 1 a.m. Wednesday, with precipitation chances reaching 50% Tuesday night.
The National Weather Service indicates that a stronger storm or two cannot be completely ruled out Tuesday through Thursday, although the overall severe weather threat appears marginal.
Wednesday brings a 50% shower chance and temperatures near 68 degrees.
Five Day Outlook: Thursday reaches 66 degrees with a 40% shower chance. Friday turns mostly sunny near 61 degrees, followed by a cooler Saturday with sunshine and highs around 60.
