Hastings, NE – Residents across central Nebraska and north central Kansas are being warned to prepare for a potentially damaging freeze this weekend, with temperatures possibly plunging to 28 degrees early Saturday morning, October 17. The approaching cold could threaten crops, gardens and exposed outdoor plumbing across 30 counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Freeze Watch was issued at 12:49 p.m. Thursday, October 15, covering portions of central, east central and south central Nebraska, along with north central Kansas.
The watch remains in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning, when temperatures could fall several degrees below freezing.
30 Counties Across Two States Affected
The Nebraska portion includes Buffalo, Hall, Adams, Dawson, York, Hamilton, Phelps, Kearney, Clay, Fillmore and several surrounding counties.
Major communities under the watch include Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, York, Lexington, Holdrege, Aurora and Central City.
In Kansas, the watch covers Phillips, Smith, Jewell, Rooks, Osborne and Mitchell counties, including Phillipsburg, Smith Center, Mankato, Osborne and Beloit.
Why 28 Degrees Could Be Damaging
Temperatures falling to 28 degrees could cause significant damage to sensitive vegetation, especially crops and garden plants still exposed during the autumn season.
The National Weather Service warns that frost and freeze conditions could kill vulnerable plants and potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
What Residents Should Do Before Friday Night
Homeowners should consider bringing potted plants indoors and covering sensitive vegetation before temperatures begin dropping.
Residents should also consider protecting exposed outdoor plumbing from freezing conditions.
Agricultural producers should monitor updated forecasts and prepare for possible impacts to remaining crops.
A Freeze Watch means freezing temperatures are possible but not yet certain. The alert could be upgraded to a Freeze Warning if forecasters become more confident.
The watch is scheduled from 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. CDT Saturday, October 17 .
