Hastings, NE — Residents across south central Nebraska and north central Kansas should prepare for a significant weather transition between Thursday, Oct. 22, and Monday, Oct. 26, as unusually warm temperatures give way to strong winds, increasing rain chances and a noticeable cooldown by the end of the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, warm conditions will continue through Friday, but strengthening southerly winds could produce gusts reaching 45 mph Friday before a wetter weather pattern develops over the weekend.
Thursday will bring partly sunny skies and afternoon highs ranging from 76 to 80 degrees. Southerly winds are expected between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts approaching 30 mph.
Friday could be the warmest and windiest day of the forecast period, with temperatures climbing between 77 and 81 degrees.
South winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 45 mph. These conditions could make driving more challenging, particularly for high profile vehicles traveling on exposed highways.
By Saturday, temperatures will begin cooling, with afternoon highs ranging from 67 to 78 degrees.
A 30% chance of scattered showers is forecast, primarily across western portions of the region. Winds will shift from southerly to northerly at approximately 15 to 20 mph.
Sunday will bring a more noticeable change, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 56 to 73 degrees.
Rain chances will increase to approximately 60%, with more widespread precipitation possible later Sunday and continuing into Monday.
The changing conditions could affect outdoor activities, agricultural operations and weekend travel across Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney and surrounding communities.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor belongings ahead of Friday's stronger winds and monitor updated forecasts as rain chances increase.
The National Weather Service expects the wetter pattern to extend into early next week.
