Hastings, NE – Residents across south central Nebraska should prepare for potentially strong winds Friday, October 23, as the National Weather Service warns that afternoon gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph across much of the region. The developing wind threat comes ahead of increasing rain chances and cooler temperatures expected during the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued at 3:13 a.m. CDT Wednesday identifies Friday afternoon as the primary period of concern for stronger winds. The outlook covers south central Nebraska and portions of north central Kansas, including communities across Adams, Hall, Buffalo, Kearney and surrounding counties.
The potential gusts could create difficult driving conditions, particularly for high profile vehicles traveling on exposed highways. Residents should also consider securing lightweight outdoor furniture, decorations and other loose objects before winds strengthen.
While the regional outlook highlights gusts potentially reaching 50 mph, the local Hastings forecast does not yet specify Friday's peak wind speeds.

Looking farther ahead, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlook for October 28 through November 3 favors above normal temperatures across much of Nebraska, while precipitation probabilities lean toward above normal amounts.

For now, Friday's potential wind gusts remain the most significant near term weather concern. Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as the timing and strength of the winds become clearer.
