GRAND ISLAND, NE – The coldest temperatures of the fall season are expected across parts of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas early Saturday, Oct. 17, with a Freeze Watch in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. and overnight temperatures forecast to fall into the upper 20s and lower 30s.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the Freeze Watch covers its entire forecast area as the region prepares for its first widespread near freezing or below freezing temperatures of the season.
Forecast lows include 29 degrees in Ord, Lexington, Holdrege, Hebron, Phillipsburg and Smith Center. Hastings, Kearney, Aurora, York and Fullerton are expected to reach 30 degrees, while Grand Island could fall to 31.
The coldest conditions are forecast around daybreak Saturday, with temperatures generally reaching their lowest levels between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m.
Widespread frost is also expected across the region, including communities where temperatures remain slightly above freezing.
The weather service warns that frost and freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage.
Residents are encouraged to protect tender plants, bring vulnerable potted vegetation indoors and take precautions to prevent exposed outdoor plumbing from freezing.
A Freeze Watch indicates that freezing temperatures are possible. It does not mean every location will fall below 32 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to recover Saturday morning as the coldest air retreats. By 10 a.m., readings are forecast to reach around 40 degrees in Grand Island, Hastings and Kearney, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the lower to middle 50s.
Residents should prepare for widespread frost and potentially damaging freezing temperatures early Saturday, particularly between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m., while monitoring National Weather Service updates for any changes to the Freeze Watch.
