SEELEY LAKE, MT – A Winter Weather Advisory will take effect Saturday evening, Oct. 10, across portions of western Montana, with up to 3 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 35 mph expected along several mountain highways through Sunday.
The National Weather Service in Missoula issued the advisory Thursday afternoon for the Bitterroot and Sapphire mountains and the Potomac Seeley Lake region. The advisory begins at 6 p.m. MDT Saturday and continues until 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11.
Forecasters expect snow accumulations of up to 3 inches across the affected areas. Gusty winds could accompany the snowfall, with peak gusts reaching 35 mph.
The advisory covers several important travel corridors, including Lolo Pass, Highway 83 between Seeley Lake and Condon, Interstate 90 from East Missoula to Bearmouth, Highway 93 between Sula and Lost Trail Pass, and Highway 200 from Bonner to Greenough.
The Weather Service warned that slippery road conditions could develop during the 24 hour advisory period.
Drivers traveling through mountain passes and along affected highways should prepare for changing road conditions as snow develops Saturday evening and continues into Sunday.
Although snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively modest, even a few inches could create hazardous driving conditions where snow accumulates on road surfaces.
The Weather Service urged motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling. Drivers can obtain updated Montana road conditions by calling 511.
Pedestrians should also watch for slippery surfaces on sidewalks, stairs and driveways, where ice or accumulating snow could increase the risk of falls.
The advisory applies to the specified mountain and regional travel corridors rather than all of western Montana. The bulletin does not provide separate snowfall totals for individual towns or highways.
Travelers should expect the greatest concern for slippery roads from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon, with the Winter Weather Advisory scheduled to expire at 6 p.m. MDT Sunday.
