Livingston, MT – Drivers traveling Interstate 90 through south central Montana could encounter dangerous crosswinds late Saturday night into Sunday, November 8, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 60 mph in some locations and creating hazardous conditions for trucks, trailers and other high profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, strong foothills crosswinds are expected to affect travel along I 90 and US Highway 191 from Big Timber through Livingston to Nye, with the strongest winds anticipated near Livingston and Nye.
The agency issued its latest travel weather update Saturday afternoon, November 7, highlighting the potential for hazardous driving conditions through Sunday afternoon.
Wind Gusts Could Reach 60 MPH or Higher
Forecasters expect peak wind gusts between 45 and 60 mph in the most affected corridor, particularly overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service reports a 65% chance of wind gusts exceeding 60 mph in Livingston.
Big Timber faces a 40% chance of gusts exceeding 50 mph.
Surrounding areas could experience gusts ranging from 30 to 45 mph, although wind speeds will vary depending on location and terrain.
High Profile Vehicles Face Greatest Travel Risk
Strong crosswinds can make it difficult to maintain control of vehicles, particularly semitrailers, recreational vehicles, box trucks and vehicles towing trailers.
The National Weather Service is urging motorists operating high profile vehicles to consider delaying travel or using alternate routes until conditions improve.
Drivers continuing through the affected corridor should reduce speed when necessary, maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and remain alert for sudden wind gusts.
Open stretches of interstate and areas near mountain foothills may be particularly vulnerable to abrupt crosswinds.
The strongest conditions are expected late Saturday night through Sunday morning, with gusty winds potentially continuing into Sunday afternoon.
Motorists should check updated forecasts and Montana road conditions before departing, especially when traveling between Big Timber, Livingston and Nye.
