LIVINGSTON, MT – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of central and south central Montana, where 2 to 6 inches of wet snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph could create difficult travel conditions from early Sunday through Monday, Oct. 11 12.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the advisory takes effect at midnight Saturday night and continues until noon MDT Monday, covering the Livingston area, Northern Park County, Judith Gap, Beartooth Foothills, Northern Sweet Grass and Southern Wheatland areas.
Communities included in the advisory are Livingston, Big Timber, Harlowton, Judith Gap, Clyde Park, Springdale, Wilsall, McLeod, Nye, Fishtail, Shawmut and Twodot.
Forecasters expect periods of wet snow to produce 2 to 6 inches of accumulation across the advisory area, with locally higher totals anticipated along mountain travel routes.
The National Weather Service specifically warns that Bozeman Pass could receive more than 6 inches of snow, making Interstate 90 west of Livingston particularly hazardous during the winter weather event.
Additional travel concerns include Interstate 90 from Big Timber through Livingston to Bozeman Pass and U.S. Highway 191 between Big Timber and Judith Gap.
Slushy or snow covered roads and reduced visibility could make driving difficult, particularly where gusty winds accompany periods of snowfall.
Travelers heading through Bozeman Pass should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions and consider the possibility of significant snow accumulation along the interstate.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use caution and check updated road conditions by calling 511 before traveling.
The advisory was issued Friday evening, giving residents and travelers time to prepare before conditions deteriorate late Saturday night.
The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon MDT Monday, Oct. 12. Drivers should expect the greatest travel concerns where accumulating snow affects higher elevation routes, especially Interstate 90 over Bozeman Pass.
