Billings, MT – The first widespread snowfall of the season is expected to sweep across the Northern Rockies this weekend, bringing potentially difficult travel to mountain passes and the possibility of snow reaching some lower elevations.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the developing winter weather event is expected from Saturday through Monday , with widespread mountain snowfall forecast across portions of the Northern Rockies.
The Weather Prediction Center's latest outlook shows the greatest probabilities for at least minor winter storm impacts concentrated across mountainous areas of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Parts of the broader region could also experience winter weather impacts as colder air moves in.
Forecasters said drivers should use caution, particularly when traveling through higher elevation mountain passes. Snow covered or slippery roads and rapidly changing conditions could make weekend and early week travel more difficult.
Unlike some early season snow events, the snow is expected to be heavy and wet , according to the Weather Prediction Center. That could add significant weight to trees and power lines in areas receiving heavier accumulations, potentially creating additional hazards.
Colder air accompanying the system could also allow some snow to fall at lower elevations, expanding the effects beyond the highest mountain terrain.
The outlook issued Wednesday remains several days ahead of the storm, meaning exact snowfall amounts, snow levels and areas experiencing the greatest impacts could change as the system approaches.
Anyone planning to drive through the Northern Rockies from Saturday through Monday should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts and road conditions before traveling, especially along mountain routes.
