Billings, MT – Southern Montana will feel more like late summer than October this week, with unusually warm weather potentially pushing some communities close to 90 degrees Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, temperatures will remain above normal through the workweek as a warm and dry fall pattern persists. Record highs could be challenged Monday, when widespread readings in the middle to upper 80s and a few temperatures around 90 are possible.
The warmth means an early season frost or freeze is not the immediate weather concern across the Billings forecast area. Instead, the combination of very warm temperatures, dry conditions and occasional breezes could make it easier for fires to start and spread.
Billings is forecast to reach 78 degrees Sunday before climbing to 87 Monday. Highs remain around 79 Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by 74 Thursday and 79 Friday.
Other communities could be even warmer Monday. Forsyth is forecast near 86, Livingston near 85 and Sheridan, Wyoming, near 89. Fort Smith could reach 89, while Hardin is forecast near 88.
Wind will occasionally add to the dry weather concern. The NWS forecast shows gusts generally ranging from the teens into the 20s mph for much of the week, although Livingston could see gusts around 35 mph Friday.
Residents should use care with anything that could produce a spark while vegetation remains dry.
For the rest of the workweek, southern Montana can expect the warm, dry pattern to continue. Monday should bring the peak of the heat, followed by somewhat lower—but still mild—temperatures through Friday.
