St. Louis, MO – Residents across eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms beginning Tuesday evening, Oct. 13, with damaging winds possible overnight and periods of heavy rainfall continuing through Thursday, Oct. 15.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, thunderstorms will approach from the west after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Some storms could become strong, with isolated severe weather possible. The primary concern is damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph, while hail up to 1 inch in diameter remains a lesser threat.
Forecasters expect thunderstorms to gradually weaken as they move eastward overnight, although additional rounds of rain are anticipated Wednesday and Thursday.
Rainfall totals could vary significantly across the region, particularly where thunderstorms repeatedly develop.
The Weather Service projects approximately 1.3 inches of rain in St. Louis, with higher amounts possible in communities farther west and north.
Jefferson City could receive around 2.7 inches, while Columbia may see approximately 2.5 inches. Mexico, Missouri, is forecast to receive around 2.4 inches, and Hermann could see approximately 2.1 inches.
Some locations could experience substantially higher rainfall depending on thunderstorm development. Columbia has a 78% probability of receiving at least 2 inches of rain through Thursday, while Jefferson City has a 73% probability.
Although the rainfall may benefit areas needing moisture, heavier downpours could temporarily reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly during evening and morning commutes.
Residents should secure loose outdoor objects, remain alert for changing conditions and avoid traveling through flooded roadways.
The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive weather warnings as thunderstorms move across the region.
The greatest immediate concern is Tuesday night's potential for damaging winds, followed by additional rainfall through Thursday.
