St. Louis, MO – A widespread freeze warning will take effect tonight across large portions of Missouri and Illinois, with temperatures expected to plunge into the upper 20s by Saturday morning, threatening sensitive plants, remaining crops and exposed outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple forecast offices issued or maintained freeze warnings early Friday, November 6, covering communities including St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City, Cape Girardeau, Belleville, Edwardsville, Carbondale and Quincy.
Freeze Warning Begins Tonight Most affected areas will be under a freeze warning from midnight Friday night until 8 a.m. Saturday , with temperatures potentially falling to 28 or 29 degrees.
However, portions of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri, including Carbondale, Mount Vernon, Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff, will enter the warning period earlier, at 11 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service offices in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Paducah are monitoring freezing conditions across central, eastern, northern and southern Missouri, along with western and southern Illinois.
Another Freeze Possible Sunday Morning The Paducah weather office has also issued a freeze watch for portions of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with temperatures potentially reaching 29 degrees.
Forecasters warn that hard freezes could bring the growing season to an end in affected areas.
Residents are encouraged to bring sensitive potted plants indoors, protect remaining outdoor vegetation and take precautions to prevent exposed plumbing from freezing.
Garden hoses should be disconnected, and vulnerable outdoor water lines should be insulated where necessary.
Although the warnings primarily concern vegetation and plumbing, drivers should also prepare for freezing early morning temperatures.
Residents across both states should complete outdoor preparations Friday before temperatures fall overnight.
