St. Louis, MO – Residents across eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois are being urged to protect outdoor plants Friday evening as a widespread freeze threatens to bring temperatures into the upper 20s overnight, potentially damaging sensitive vegetation by Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a Freeze Warning will be in effect from midnight until 8 a.m. Saturday, November 7, covering the entire local forecast area.
Forecasters expect temperatures to fall near or below the freezing mark of 32 degrees across much of the region, with some communities experiencing lows as cold as 26 degrees.
The warning includes the greater St. Louis metropolitan area and surrounding communities across Missouri and Illinois.
Forecast temperatures include approximately 30 degrees in Columbia, 31 degrees in Jefferson City and 29 degrees near Rolla.
Farther east, portions of southwestern Illinois could experience temperatures in the upper 20s, with areas near Belleville and surrounding communities forecast to fall below freezing.
The St. Louis metropolitan area is expected to experience temperatures near freezing, with colder conditions possible in surrounding communities.
The National Weather Service warns that these temperatures could damage or kill tender outdoor vegetation, particularly plants that have not yet been protected from seasonal cold.
Residents with flowers, garden plants or other sensitive vegetation should bring them indoors when possible.
Plants that cannot be moved should be covered with appropriate protective materials before temperatures begin falling Friday night.
The coldest conditions are expected during the overnight and early morning hours Saturday, when temperatures typically reach their lowest levels.
Residents traveling early Saturday should also prepare for freezing temperatures, particularly in rural and low lying areas.
Although the warning is primarily focused on vegetation, the widespread cold marks an important seasonal change for communities across the region.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to complete outdoor preparations before midnight Friday.
