ST. LOUIS, MO – An unusually intense October warm spell is spreading across the Mississippi Valley and portions of the Midwest, with temperatures approaching the low 90s and numerous daily high temperature records potentially at risk Monday, Oct. 12, and Tuesday, Oct. 13.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center, a strengthening ridge of high pressure will bring exceptionally warm conditions across a broad area stretching from the Great Lakes toward the Gulf Coast.
High temperatures in the middle 80s to low 90s are possible across parts of the central and southern United States, with some communities experiencing readings more than 20 degrees above normal for mid October.
The Weather Prediction Center indicates that numerous daily temperature records could be challenged or broken as the unusually warm air expands across the Mississippi Valley.
Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and surrounding states are among the areas facing unusually high October temperatures.
Cities across the central Mississippi Valley could experience afternoon readings near or above 90 degrees, while portions of the Ohio Valley may reach the middle to upper 80s.
The warmest conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday as the high pressure ridge strengthens over the central United States.
Temperatures across the broader region are forecast to run approximately 10 to 20 degrees above seasonal averages, with locally greater departures possible.
For residents accustomed to cooler autumn weather, the heat could make outdoor activities feel more like midsummer than mid October.
People working outdoors, attending sporting events or participating in afternoon activities should remain mindful of the unusually warm conditions and stay hydrated.
While record breaking temperatures are possible, official records will depend on observed highs at individual weather stations.
The Weather Prediction Center's outlook highlights a widespread temperature anomaly rather than a uniform forecast for every community.
Residents can check local National Weather Service forecasts for city specific temperatures and potential daily records.
