Tupelo, MS – A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of northeastern Mississippi through Saturday evening, Oct. 10, as Hurricane Isaias approaches the Mid South with strong winds and heavy rainfall that could produce localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the storm is forecast to weaken from hurricane strength but remain a tropical storm as it moves inland, bringing sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 45 mph in affected areas.
The Tropical Storm Warning includes portions of northeastern Mississippi near Aberdeen, where tropical storm force winds are anticipated. The warning continues through 7 p.m. Saturday, with impacts expected to begin after midnight Friday.
Elsewhere across the Mid South, including the Memphis area, a Wind Advisory is scheduled from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect sustained winds exceeding 25 mph and gusts potentially reaching 45 mph.
Heavy rainfall is another concern, with the weather service's latest Friday afternoon briefing projecting widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches and locally higher amounts approaching 4 inches.
A Flood Watch covers portions of the region east of the Mississippi River from 1 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday.
Flooding could develop in urban and low lying locations where heavy rain overwhelms drainage systems.
Communities including Tupelo, Aberdeen, Oxford, Corinth and Memphis are within the broader area facing rain and wind impacts, although the strongest conditions will vary by location.
The weather service is urging residents to secure loose outdoor objects and prepare contingency plans for Saturday outdoor activities.
High profile vehicles could also encounter difficult driving conditions during stronger wind gusts.
Residents should maintain multiple ways to receive weather warnings and avoid driving through flooded roads.
The most significant impacts are expected Saturday, with strong winds continuing into the evening and the Flood Watch remaining in effect through early Sunday.
