Pascagoula, MS – Hurricane and Storm Surge watches remain in effect for southern Jackson County as Isaias could bring life threatening storm surge, heavy rain, strong winds and a few tornadoes beginning Friday, Oct. 9.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the watches include Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, St. Martin, Gautier and Moss Point.
The latest local wind forecast calls for sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 45 mph, remaining below tropical storm force. However, accounting for typical uncertainty in Isaias’ track, size and intensity, the NWS identifies the potential for winds of 58 to 73 mph.
Storm surge poses a serious coastal threat. Forecasters say 4 to 7 feet of inundation above ground is possible somewhere within surge prone areas. The window of concern runs from Friday morning through Saturday morning.
The NWS says the surge could produce deep flooding, severe beach and shoreline erosion and major damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks and piers. Residents in vulnerable areas should prepare for possible evacuation and leave if local officials issue evacuation orders.
Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts possible. The NWS assesses the rainfall threat as having the potential for moderate flooding. Roads, low lying areas, streams and drainage systems could flood, with some road and bridge closures possible.
The tornado environment is considered somewhat favorable, with a few tornadoes possible. Residents should be ready to shelter quickly if a Tornado Warning is issued.
Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates and guidance from Mississippi emergency management officials. Expected wind, surge, flooding and tornado impacts could change as confidence increases in Isaias’ track, size and intensity.
