Jackson, MS – Mississippi’s fall cooldown looks unlikely to take firm control during Oct. 12 18, with temperatures favored to average warmer than normal while the state also leans toward a wetter week.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, favors above normal temperatures across Mississippi during the seven day period. Above normal precipitation is also favored.
Warm conditions are hardly unusual in Mississippi during October. The outlook instead indicates that temperatures have increased odds of averaging above the state’s already mild mid October normals. It does not signal extreme or record heat.
From Jackson and the Delta to Hattiesburg and the Gulf Coast, that could keep the seasonal transition toward cooler weather moving slowly. Northern Mississippi could still experience cooler mornings between weather systems, even while the week as a whole ends up warmer than normal.
Rain may provide the bigger change from stretches of warm fall weather. The CPC outlook favors above normal precipitation, meaning Oct. 12 18 has increased odds of finishing wetter than is typical for the period.
Exactly when that rain could arrive remains uncertain. The outlook does not provide rainfall totals, identify individual systems or show which days will be wet. It also does not mean rain is expected every day.
For Mississippi, the broad signal is continued October warmth with better odds for a wetter than normal week , rather than an early push of sustained cold.
Daily temperatures and specific rain chances should become clearer as Oct. 12 approaches and shorter range National Weather Service forecasts begin covering the period.
