Jackson, MS – Mississippi residents are preparing for an unusually hot Columbus Day week, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid 90s before a strong cold front brings significantly cooler weather by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, above normal temperatures will persist through Friday, Oct. 16, with dry conditions expected across most of the region before a major temperature change arrives.
Temperatures Could Reach 95 Degrees
Monday, Oct. 12, will bring widespread highs in the lower to mid 90s, including 93 degrees in Jackson, Greenville and Vicksburg.
Greenville could reach 95 degrees Wednesday, while Greenwood is forecast to reach 95 degrees Wednesday and Thursday.
Jackson is expected to remain around 93 to 94 degrees through Thursday, while Meridian and Hattiesburg will also experience highs in the lower 90s.
Rain chances remain extremely limited through much of the week, with many communities seeing precipitation probabilities near zero.
Strong Cold Front Brings Weekend Cooldown
A strong cold front is expected to bring much cooler temperatures heading into Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18.
Jackson's forecast high falls from 94 degrees Thursday to 70 degrees Saturday, a 24 degree decline.
Greenville is expected to cool from 93 degrees Thursday to 73 degrees Saturday, while Vicksburg could drop from 94 degrees to 72 degrees.
The biggest difference may be felt during the overnight and early morning hours.
Sunday morning lows could reach 45 degrees in Jackson, 46 degrees in Greenwood and 48 degrees in Greenville.
Brookhaven could fall to 51 degrees, while Hattiesburg is forecast to reach 52 degrees.
Mostly Dry Conditions Continue
Despite the approaching cold front, the National Weather Service expects limited rainfall through most of the week.
Residents planning outdoor activities for Columbus Day can expect hot, predominantly dry conditions, followed by more comfortable temperatures next weekend.
The cooler air will mark a noticeable shift from the summerlike heat dominating the beginning of the week.
