Jackson, MS – Parts of central and eastern Mississippi face a flash flood threat beginning Friday night as Tropical Storm Isaias could produce 3 to 5 inches of rain in a short period of time.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Level 1 limited flash flood threat is forecast from Friday night through Saturday night. The threat covers a large portion of central and eastern Mississippi, including areas around Jackson, Meridian, Philadelphia, Laurel and Hattiesburg.
Forecasters said 3 to 5 inches of rainfall could occur over a relatively short period, increasing the potential for localized flash flooding.
Low lying locations and urban areas could be particularly vulnerable where drainage systems become overwhelmed by intense rainfall. Roads could also become flooded quickly during the heaviest downpours.
The forecast comes as Isaias moves toward the Gulf Coast before tracking inland. The storm's eventual path will determine exactly where the heaviest bands of tropical rainfall develop across Mississippi.
Because the event remains several days away, the National Weather Service cautioned that changes should be expected in later outlooks. Shifts in the storm track could move the greatest flooding threat into different communities or alter expected rainfall amounts.
Residents across Jackson, Hinds County, central Mississippi and areas farther east should begin paying close attention to forecast updates before Friday night.
The National Weather Service recommends having multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Drivers should also avoid flooded roads during the event, as water depth and road conditions can be difficult to determine.
Additional updates are expected as forecasters gain confidence in Isaias' inland track and rainfall distribution.
