JACKSON, Miss. — Open enrollment for 2027 health insurance begins Sunday, Nov. 1, giving Mississippi residents an opportunity to compare Marketplace plans, review premiums and determine whether they qualify for financial assistance.
Mississippi uses the federal Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov . Open enrollment runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 15, 2027 . Residents who enroll or change plans by Dec. 15 can have coverage begin Jan. 1. Those enrolling between Dec. 16 and Jan. 15 generally receive coverage beginning Feb. 1.
The Mississippi Insurance Department has been reminding residents that Marketplace open enrollment begins Nov. 1 and is encouraging consumers to use official enrollment channels as they shop for health coverage.
What Mississippi residents should check Jackson area residents and consumers statewide should compare monthly health insurance premiums, deductibles, co pays, out of pocket maximums, prescription drug coverage and whether preferred doctors and hospitals remain in network.
The Mississippi Insurance Department recommends comparing the full cost of coverage rather than focusing only on monthly premiums. Consumers should consider expected doctor visits, medications, procedures, deductibles and other out of pocket expenses before selecting a plan.
Residents should also update their expected 2027 household income and family information because those details can affect eligibility for Marketplace financial assistance.
HealthCare.gov allows consumers to enter their ZIP code, household size and estimated income to preview available 2027 health insurance plans and estimated prices. Premium estimates can reflect savings for which a household may qualify.
Mississippi Marketplace plans vary by location Mississippi residents may have access to plans from one or both companies participating in the federal Marketplace, depending on where they live.
The Mississippi Insurance Department currently identifies Ambetter/Magnolia as one of the companies offering Marketplace coverage in the state and notes that insurer availability depends on location.
That makes ZIP code specific comparison important for residents in Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Southaven and communities across Mississippi.
Consumers should confirm that their doctors, hospitals and prescription medications are included under a plan before enrolling.
Financial assistance may reduce premiums Mississippi residents purchasing insurance through the federal Marketplace may qualify for financial assistance that reduces the cost of private health coverage.
The Mississippi Insurance Department notes that federal assistance programs may be available for residents who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but need help paying for private Marketplace insurance.
The amount a household ultimately pays can therefore differ substantially from a plan's full, unsubsidized premium.
Enrollment deadlines matter Mississippi residents who want health insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027 , should enroll or make plan changes by Dec. 15 .
Open enrollment continues through Jan. 15, 2027 . Consumers enrolling from Dec. 16 through Jan. 15 generally receive coverage beginning Feb. 1.
After Jan. 15, most consumers need to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to purchase or change Marketplace coverage.
Qualifying events can include losing other health insurance, getting married, having a child or certain changes in residence. Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program can accept applications throughout the year for people who qualify.
Mississippi residents can compare 2027 health insurance plans, estimate potential savings and enroll through HealthCare.gov .
